Anna Campbell Chats

For the love of…

Anna Campbell

Anna Campbell is quickly establishing her brand amongst dreamy, bohemian brides in search of the perfect dress. Creating stunning and elegant custom silk dresses for the classical to the contemporary bride. Each dress is hand crafted in Melbourne and oozes individuality through soft sparkle, exquisite lace and embellishments that drape the body, ever so radiantly.

Like other brides to be, we’ve been admiring the work of Anna Campbell, since she blessed the wedding dress arena -perhaps it’s her elegant and graceful style that differs from the typical wedding dress, that has drawn us all in. Speaking first hand, having been fortunate enough to purchase a couple of Anna’s garments, including a stunning silk gown that wraps and twists around the upper body, dropping from the bust and layering into a short train. It was absolutely exquisite to wear classic, feminine and luxuriously free – made for the perfect choice in dancing gown the night of my wedding.

Ironically, my husband first introduced the Anna Campbell brand to us after he had the pleasure of spending time with her whilst fulfilling a work tour at the Brunswick Business Incubator. He arrived home with Anna Campbell’s business card and said, as a bride to be I’ll love Anna’s brand – he wasn’t wrong. What caught my attention most about Anna was her humble and extremely polite nature, only to willing to share her growing success story with us.

We love Anna and her clever team, here is our chat…

Can you share with us who Anna Campbell is?

I would like to say ‘outside of work’ but there really isn’t any outside of work. I love what I do and I do it pretty much 24 hours a day! If I’m not in the studio or glued to my laptop at home, I am in our boutiques working with a client. When I do take time off I love horse riding, interior decoration, travelling and cooking.

What is the history to the Anna Campbell brand?

I moved to Melbourne in 2007 when I was 19 and started selling handmade headpieces to boutiques. The headpiece range was extended to dresses and with demand and natural progression, the label developed into high end bridal.

‘Style by Anna Campbell’ was much the same, I have been collecting vintage pieces and amazing décor for years now and am so passionate about the industry that it seemed like the obvious thing to do with my treasures, to hire them out.

We are constantly guiding our brides through their weddings and recommending ideas on styling so to have the opportunity to provide items to style their entire wedding from dress to dessert table was one we simply couldn’t pass up! At this stage we are only running the service Australia wide, however we would love to extend to the US one day.

When you first started out at the Brunswick Business Incubator did you envisage that you would be where you are today – one of Melbourne’s biggest names in bridal designs?

By the time I had gotten to the Incubator I had a few years behind me working from home, so although we were still very much finding our feet, and hiring our first full-time staff members, I knew I loved what I was doing and was incredibly driven to see it succeed. At that stage we had started our bridal collections, but our focus was still on bridesmaids and formal. I certainly didn’t predict how much we were going to love bridal and pursue it.

I’m sure your talent could take you anywhere, what made you decide on bridal gowns as the Anna Campbell brand?

Bridal was never really a decision for me, I fell into being a wedding dress designer when girls started ordering our colourful party dresses in full length and in ivory tones as their bridal dress. I didn’t really know that bridal was what I wanted to do until I was doing it!

How do you describe your style and where do you draw inspiration from?

I draw inspiration from a huge range of sources – from nature, to vintage references, and architecture.  In general, we just want to make ridiculously beautiful dresses where the style will be appreciated eternally. I would describe our style as a little bit romantic, classic, inspired by vintage pieces, with a modern silhouette.

What makes your brand stand out from other bridal designs?

We tend to focus more on our brides, and how a dress will make them look and feel more than we do on trends and competition. I really want all of our brides to feel part of our family and connected to the ethics of our collections and label, no matter where or how they purchase their dress.

What is your favourite colour and why?

I would have to say shades of blue and green. I think it may have something to do with being a red head!

Can you share a fun fact about Anna Campbell or your brand?

Hmmm this is a hard one! On a personal note, our customers are genuinely  surprised when they meet me face to face, as they all say they thought I was really old!

We love hearing peoples food recommendations, please share your three favourite eateries?

Red Spice Road, Chin Chin, Baby
