The Gathering Florist Chat

For the Love of…

The Gathering Florist

The Gathering Florist is a Melbourne and Geelong based Floral company. Victoria, is the visionary behind this charming flower fairy tale. I first met Victoria through a mutual friend at her home town of Ocean Grove, when we were so old and wise as thirteen year olds. At first introduction it was evident she was the creative and original kind so it has come at no surprise The Gathering Florist is blossoming.

The Gathering Florist designs whimsical and romantic flower arrangements and installations for weddings and events. What sets them aside from all the other floral and style studios – aside from their unique and incredible ability to make any occasion or space look magical – is that they run spectacular, fun workshops for Hens days and special events. How cool is that? Imagine a bunch of your best buddies together sipping champagne, making flower crowns with fresh and vibrant florals. Sounds so heavenly.

There are always flowers for those who want to see them and The Gathering Florist arrangements will definitely make a memorable impact on you and your event.

We loved our chat with Victoria from The Gathering Florist and we think you will too..

Who is Victoria that is behind the Gathering Florist?                                                                                   I own and run the business from a home floral studio in South Yarra. I have a small team of fabulous florists that work for me on our events. We are all obsessed with anything wedding related and all the girls are extremely outgoing and love meeting new people especially at our workshops.

How did the Gathering Florist come about?                                                                                                        It started when my best friend Rose asked me to arrange flowers for her wedding. I absolutely loved it and the next week I enrolled in flower school and started the business. It’s now been 3 years and I still love every second of it. There is something magical about working on weddings. I wouldn’t want to do anything else.

The Gathering Florist is a very cute name and superbly fitted to what you do, how did it come about?                                                                                                                                                                      It actually came from one of my favourite songs by Joanna Newsom, My favourite line she sings “the gathering floozie affords to be choosy” so I changed floozie to florist as I obviously didn’t want to give clients the wrong idea!

Tell us about your flower crown workshops?
The workshop is lots of fun, we come to your venue (or house) with all the fresh seasonal flowers. We arrive at the start of the event so the ladies can wear the crowns for the remaining of the night. The workshop goes for roughly one hour and I teach the ladies to design and construct their own crowns. There are lots of laughs and champagne to be had and it’s so awesome seeing all the ladies looking stunning and so proud of their creations afterwards.

Tell us about the weddings you style, what does your service include?                                             Initially I start with a consultation and we discuss the venue, style and hopes for the clients wedding. I then put together a mood board of flowers that will be in season and the vision I have. We all love our job so no job is too small or big.  We are more than happy to only do bouquets or the whole works (bouquets, ceremony and venue)

How do we get in touch regarding your services?                                                                                   Email is best and I’m all over the socials too.

Can you share any challenging moments you have had whilst playing stylist?                                  I guess the big challenge is working along side Mother Nature. At the end of the day she decides what flowers we get so there have been the summer just gone we ordered our flowers and Mother Nature decides to have a major wind storm. I always have a plan b so it’s not too much of a problem and I really shouldn’t complain, as Mother Nature is pretty dam amazing most of the time.

Where do you draw your creativity and styling inspiration from?                                                Different colours always inspire me. There is nothing I love more than getting to the markets early and playing around with the different flowers and coming up with the perfect combination for my clients.

If you could only have one flower in the world what would it be?                                                          It changes all the time but a simple peach rose gets me every time.

What is your fav colour?                                                                                                                                      Peach it my absolute favourite it looks beautiful any combination. It looks fab with whites and greens or with bright pinks and reds.

Love hearing people’s food recommendations; can you list your three favourite eateries?        I sure can! My favorite café is Lucky Penny, South Yarra. I often need a break from my studio so you will often find me working from their tables drinking coffee. The menu is all seasonal produce and the staff are fab! Smith and Daughter is spectacular. It is vegan but don’t let that put you off. I just had a girls night at Lazer Pig in Fitzroy. The pizza is amazing and it’s such a fun pub to have a few too many drinks too.

In the words of Luther Burbank – Don’t wait for someone to bring you flowers. Plant your own garden and decorate your own soul. We think you have done a pretty darn good job of fulfilling this with your creative flair, Victoria not only for your own soul but everyone else’s too. Thank you for making us feel like flower crown fairies at my daughter’s Baptism.. x
